abstract = {Carbonate formations are highly heterogeneous, and the velocity-porosity relationships are controlled by various microstructural parameters, such as the types of pores and their distribution. Because diagenesis is responsible for important changes in the microstructure of carbonate rocks, we have extended the standard effective medium approach to model the impact of diagenesis on the carbonate elastic properties through a step-by-step effective medium modeling. Two different carbonate rocks deposited, respectively, in lacustrine and marine environments are considered in this study. The first key step is the characterization of the diagenesis, which affected the two studied carbonate sample sets. Effective medium models integrating all of the geologic information accessible from petrographic analysis are then built. The evolution of the microstructural parameters during diagenesis is thoroughly constrained based on an extensive experimental data set, including X-ray diffraction analysis, different porosimetry methods, and ultrasonic velocity measurements. A new theoretical approach including two sources of compliance is developed to model the specific behavior of carbonates. A compliant interface is introduced around the main carbonate grains to represent grain contacts and the different pore scales are taken into account through multiscale modeling. Finally, direct calculations with the model provide elastic wave velocities representative of the different diagenetic stages. An extrapolation to permeability evolution is also introduced. This approach allows the identification of the acoustic signature of specific diagenetic events, such as dolomitization, dissolution, or cementation, and the assessment of their impact on the elastic properties of carbonates.},

abstract = {In this work, we conducted an experimental and micromechanical investigation on the mechanical and chloride diffusion properties of recycled aggregates concrete (RAC). Due to the composite aspect of the recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), their impact on the properties of concretes is first evaluated by conducting an experimental campaign and further numerically modeled using micromechanical tools. Local mechanical properties of phases such as the attached mortar, the interfacial transition zones (ITZ) and the aggregates are also investigated by means of indentation tests at nano and microscale. Finally, experimentally informed multi scale model is established and the overall elastic modulus and chloride diffusion coefficient of concretes (with different rates of RCA) are computed and compared to experimental results at macroscopic scale for discussion. The established model provides a predictive tool for the mechanical and chloride diffusion properties of RAC.},

abstract = {The study investigates the individual and combined effects of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and recycled sand on the microstructural evolution and compressive strength development of low-carbon mortars through experimental and micromechanical modelling approach. At the cement paste scale, mixtures incorporating 25\% and 50\% GGBFS as partial replacement of ordinary Portland cement were characterised using thermogravimetric analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and statistical nanoindentation to elucidate the hydration kinetics, pore structure evolution, and phase-level mechanical properties. At the mortar scale, the pore size distribution, the mechanical properties of the interfacial transition zones (ITZ), and the compressive strength were systematically examined for mortars incorporating GGBFS and recycled sand individually and in combination. Recycled sand is found to increase the macropore fraction by up to 19\%, while the pozzolanic reaction of GGBFS counteracts this effect by increasing the fine pore fraction by up to 72\% and reducing the macropore fraction below reference levels in combined mixtures. At 90 days, mortars incorporating 25\% and 50\% recycled sand alone exhibit a persistent compressive strength deficit of up to 9\% and 14\% respectively relative to the reference mortar, whereas the simultaneous incorporation of GGBFS and recycled sand at equivalent substitution levels restores the compressive strength to near-reference levels, confirming that the pozzolanic densification induced by GGBFS effectively compensates for the porosity and ITZ degradation introduced by recycled sand in low-carbon mortars. Finally, a micromechanical model combining a stoichiometric hydration framework with distinct kinetic laws for cement and slag phases coupled with a multiscale downscaling approach for strength prediction was developed and results compared to experimental data. The model reproduced the observed trends and provided satisfactory agreement for the investigated mixtures.},

abstract = {Creep and shrinkage of concrete are essential for the safety assessment of large civil engineering structures. The present paper presents two different approaches to predicting the delayed strain considering a single material point to represent the structure. The first one is a decoupled approach, such as design codes, that splits the delayed strain into four components and predicts each of them as a function of several parameters such as concrete strength. In the second approach, delayed strain is modeled as the viscoelastic response of concrete to applied external loads and/or internal hygric stresses. The advantages and inconveniences of both methods are discussed. In the end, delayed strains of concrete are predicted using these approaches for two examples of real structures: a prestressed concrete bridge and a mock-up of a biaxially prestressed containment building.},

abstract = {This work aims at developing an efficient method to compute the compliance due to a crack modeled as a flat ellipsoid of any shape in an infinite elastic matrix of arbitrary anisotropy (Eshelby problem) when no closed-form solution seems currently available. Whereas the solution of this problem usually requires the calculation of the so-called fourth-order Hill polarization tensor if the ellipsoid is not singular, it is shown that the crack compliance can be derived from the first-order term in the Taylor expansion of the Hill tensor with respect to the smallest aspect ratio of the ellipsoidal inclusion. For a 3D ellipsoidal crack model, this first-order term is expressed as a simple integral thanks to the Cauchy residue theorem. A similar method allows to express the same term in the case of a cylindrical crack model without any integral. A numerical example is finally treated.},

abstract = {This paper is devoted to the analytical derivation of the displacement intensity factor (DIF) and stress intensity factor (SIF) vectors for elliptical and ribbon-like cracks embedded in an infinite matrix, with particular focus on the case of a transformed transversely isotropic (TraTI) matrix. The approach is based on an integral equation framework applied to the crack opening displacement (COD), from which general expressions for the DIF and SIF are established for an arbitrary elastic matrix symmetry. The method of linear transformation of elastic boundary value problems – connecting the TraTI problem to a transversely isotropic (TI) reference problem in which the crack is aligned with the isotropy plane – is then applied to derive closed-form analytical expressions of the DIF and SIF for both elliptical and ribbon-like cracks. This extends a previous paper restricted to the compliance contribution tensor and average COD tensor of a crack in a TraTI matrix, to the full local COD profile and the associated DIF and SIF distributions along the crack front. A numerical application illustrates the analytical results through the computation of the local energy release rate around an elliptical crack in a monoclinic TraTI matrix. Validations against semi-analytical and finite element simulations are provided.},

abstract = {The organization of the elementary components within the ultrastructure of mineralized tissues (bone and mineralized tendons) has provoked some controversy; especially with regard to its impact on the mechanical properties of the ultrastructure. Herein, we aim at shedding some light on the issue, by developing and verifying three different continuum-micromechanics representations of the collagen-mineral interaction in the elasticity of mineralized tissues: (i) mineral foam matrix with collagen inclusions, (ii) interpenetrating network of hydroxyapaptite crystals and collagen molecules, (iii) composite of fibrils (collagen-hydroxyapatite network) embedded in a collagen-free extrafibrillar mineral foam matrix. The validation of the different concepts, based on independent sets of experiments, shows remarkable predictive capabilites of the different micromechanical representations. Still, there are significant differences in the performance of these three different micromechanical concepts, related to the sophistication with which the ultrastructure of bone is modelled. Consideration of the fibrillar organization of bone ultrastructure improves over simpler concepts like an interpenetrating network of mineral crystals and collagen molecules, which in turn is superior to a crystal-foam representation with collagen inclusions. In fact, the most advanced concept treated here integrates the two others to a consistent whole: Each fibril is regarded as an interpenetrating network of collagen molecules and mineral crystals. The fibrils host the minority of the mineral crystals present in the tissues. At a higher observation scale, the fibrils function as templates or reinforcement in an extrafibrillar crystal foam-type matrix, which hosts the majority of the minerals present in the bone ultrastructure. The reinforcement function corresponds to low-mineralized tissues (such as deer antler) where the extrafibrillar mineral foam is softer than the fibrils, whereas the template function corresponds to high-mineralized tissues (such as cow tibia) where the extrafibrillar mineral foam is stiffer than the fibrils. The collagen is clearly represented as the governing element in inducing the anisotropy of the tissues, by (i) the anisotropy of molecular collagen itself, (ii) the anisotropy of the fibrils, and (iii) the oriented morphology of the cylindrical fibrils in the isotropic extrafibrillar space. ©2004 Elsevier SAS. abstract = {The effects of short and long-term thermo-oxidative aging on stripping resistance, rut depth, stiffness modulus, fracture and fatigue resistances of asphalt concretes have been assessed. A modified RILEM thermo-oxidative aging procedure on loose asphalt mixtures has been used to evaluate the gradual evolution of these properties with the aging duration. Two short-term aging durations (4 and 8 hours at 135∘C) and three long-term thermo-oxidative aging durations (3, 6 and 9 days at 85∘C) and a reference mixture (0 day aging) have been considered to this end. The impact of long-term thermo-oxidative aging on the chemo-rheological properties of recovered asphalt binders have been investigated. At the binder scale, the results show an increase in the Fraass temperature, the softening point, the shear modulus |G∗|, the aging index (AI=IS0 + IC0) and a decrease in the penetration grade with the aging duration. Some correlations between the viscoelastic transition parameters (TVET, GVET and ωVET) of the recovered asphalt binders and the aging index have been established. At the mixture scale, the results show that the stiffness modulus (|E∗|) increases with the aging duration, while the index of fracture resistance (IFR), the stripping resistance (CW/CD), the rut depth (P) and the fatigue deformation (ε6) decrease with the aging duration. Finally, some correlations between the aging index and the rheological and the mechanical properties of binders and concretes (|G∗|, |E∗|, P, IFR, ε6) have been proposed.},

abstract = {In this work, we focus on the effect of non-ellipsoidal concave pore on thermal conduction properties of porous media with an infinite transversely isotropic matrix. This effect is described by the resistivity contribution tensors that will be computed via the Finite Elements (FE)-based numerical homogenization. The FE computations will be carried out with some adapted and bounded boundary conditions that are formulated as dependent of the Green function and its gradient for the three-dimensional Poisson’s equation in infinite anisotropic medium. It allows to incorporate the matrix anisotropy and the correction of the bias induced by the bounded character of the mesh domain. The boundary conditions are constructed and applied in such a way that they accelerate the convergence of numerical computations, and therefore preserve the accuracy of estimations. This is proved after several appropriate assessment and validation by comparing its predictions, in some particular cases, with analytical results and some available numerical ones. Finally, the effect of the pore concavity as well as that of the matrix anisotropy on the resistivity contribution tensor are quantitatively illustrated.},

In the first part of the paper, approximate relations for the resistivity contribution tensor of pores of two reference shapes, supersphere and axisymmetrical superspheroid, are developed on the basis of 3D Finite Element Modelling, presented in the companion paper, and known exact solutions for the limiting cases of spherical pores. In the second part application to effective elastic coefficients of transversely isotropic materials such as clay rocks, in the frame of homogenization theory, is presented to illustrate the impact of concavity parameter on overall properties.},

abstract = {This work aims at putting in evidence the coupled effects of both delayed de- formations of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel on the long term behavior of long span bridges. After recalling the possible origins of delayed deformations of pre- stressed concrete structures, the example of the Savines bridge is presented. This 65- year-old bridge shows excessive deflections at mid-spans which can not be predicted by the current Eurocode 2 creep laws, unless artificial coefficients are adjusted. Then a simplified prestressed cantilever beam is considered allowing to quasi-analytically address the problem of interaction between concrete creep and steel relaxation. The resolution of this problem with ageing material laws which are adapted from Eurocode 2 highlights the importance of the evolution of steel tendons after decades and allows to question the validity of laws used in models and the difficulty to identify the contri- butions of concrete and steel in the evolution of the deflection.},

Their shear modulus |G*| and phase angle φ ~are measured from -20°C to 80°C~ at different frequencies and calibrated with the well-known 2S2P1D model. The parameters of the latter are used as input data in a multi-scale model. This model relies on three scales: the mastic scale (bitumen + fillers smaller than 63 µm), the mortar scale (mastic + sand smaller than 2 mm) and the AC scale (mortar + coarse aggregates from 2 to 10 mm coated with thin bituminous mastic). Its implementation combines Mori-Tanaka scheme (adapted to a matrix/inclusion medium) at both mastic and mortar scales and a self-consistent scheme (adapted to a disordered medium) at the AC scale with a possible contact between the coarse aggregates necessary to well predict the moduli of AC at high temperature and low frequency. Based on the rheological properties of the bitumen and aggregates and the volume fractions of the constituent materials, the multi-scale model allows to predict the stiffness moduli (|E*|) and the phase angle of the AC at each ageing level. The predictions of the multi-scale model agree with the measurements over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies.},

abstract = {Within the last decade, non-periodic homogenization proved to be an accurate upscaling method for computing smooth equivalent media of elastic models of the earth interior. Doing so, it reveals the seismic anisotropy induced by small-scale structures and it eases the numerical simulation of wave propagation in complex geological settings by preventing from the use of fine and complex meshes or grids, provided that wave simulators can take anisotropy into account. In the present work, we investigate the small-scale-induced anisotropy of a typical subsurface model, namely the SEG-EAGE overthrust, for a fmax = 10Hz wavefield. We find that the amount of anisotropy can reach 20\% locally and that orthorhombic anisotropy can be a poor approximation in some areas, suggesting that the analysis of datasets in terms of orthorhomby may be not relevant. However, while low-symmetry classes of anisotropy are naturally handled by the spectral-element method (SEM), they challenge the finite-difference method (FDM) in terms of implementation and computation cost. To estimate the benefit of using homogenized media in either SEM or FDM codes, we perform numerical simulations in both the initial overthrust model and its smooth version, using either regular SEM meshes or FDM grids of different resolution. We compare the obtained waveforms with a reference solution, which allows us to study the accuracy of the simulations as a function of the computation cost for both the SEM and the FDM.},

abstract = {The equivalent elastic properties of a fractured medium is currently approached by various effective medium theories or numerical modelling of seismic wave propagation. However, these methods are limited by computational considerations and scale separation. This study proposes to extend the use of the non-periodic homogenization to fractured media. This method enables to go beyond size restriction and opens the path to the effective properties of multi-scale fractured media. First, the non-periodic homogenization is challenged towards well-established effective medium theories in the framework of the Eshelby problem. Elliptical fractures embedded in a 2D medium are depicted and the effective stiffness tensor obtained by the homogenization is compared to solutions predicted by effective medium theories. The non-periodic homogenization is best described by the differential scheme in the case of flat fractures whereas the NIA approximation is preferred for ellipses with an aspect ratio greater than 0.1. In a second part, the variation of the stiffness matrix induced by a fracture orientation deviation is quantified and set up against the effects of the fracture length and the aspect ratio.},
